Expandable garden hose is a creative and popular hose for caring the garden, washing cars/floor/pets and etc. As its name shows, the hose is able to be axial “expandable”, which can extend to about 3 times its original size with full water. And it will shrink back automatically when reduce the water flow or close the water resources.
Generally speaking, there is a fabric cover wore outside the hose (inner hose) to withstand hurts from external environments. Accordingly, the fabric cover will also expand with the inner hose to finish the whole expansion. For the outer cover, it is usually divided into two types for distinguishing – Thick Folds and Thin Folds. The following is the comparison for your reference.
① Thick Folds Fabric Cover.
It usually adopts the plain weave method, which the finished cover flat straight cylindrical shape. When put the inner hose inside it, it will compress into thick folds automatically for axial expandable need. Regular material of the cover is 300D, 450D and 600D polyester.
Advantage: It is effective in protecting the inner hose, such as wear-resistance, anti-pilling and anti-snagging.
Disadvantage: Its surface feels a little hard with a slight elasticity. The regular cover can only meet the need of simple patterns.
② Thin Folds Fabric Cover.
Its original shape is with thin folds like the corrugation, which has alternate arrangements of convex, concaves and arc surfaces. And put the inner hose inside it directly for waiting axial expandable need. Regular material of the cover is 2200D, 2500D and 3300D polyester.
Advantage: Normally it is made of high-density fabric and works better in wear-resistance, anti-pilling and anti-snagging. More patterns are acceptable.

Both of the two covers have good performance in color fastness as well as sun-proof, which means they are durable and also not easy to fade under the sunlight. Please find the following pictures of thick folds in green and thin folds in red.
① Thick Folds Fabric Cover.
As mentioned before, it is with a slight elasticity. So, its stretchability is a little lower but usually the length is enough. As for the retractivity, it will be slow to recover influenced by the plain weave structure.
② Thin Folds Fabric Cover.
The stretchability is better than the thick folds cover, because its folding design of corrugated surface allows more axial expansion. And the design can also reduce the force of friction and retract smoother.

Compare with thin folds cover from the above structure, design, axial expandable performance, it is obvious that the thick folds cover is cheaper if the other collocations of hose are same or similar.
② Thin Folds Fabric Cover.
Likewise, thin folds cover is worth to be more expensive because of better quality and higher cost.
